NYC CEC 11

What are Community Education Councils (CECs)?

There are 32 Community Education Councils (CEC’s) in New York City, each governing a Community School District that includes public elementary, intermediate, and junior high schools. They replaced the Community School Boards that existed through June 2004.

What does a Community Education Council member do?

Community Education Council members are representatives of the parents and community-at-large. They live or work in the community, and send their children to the local schools, and their role is to reflect the needs and wishes of the community regarding the education of its children.

The Councils are responsible for promoting the achievement of educational standards and objectives relating to the instruction of students and must establish a positive working relationship with the community superintendent.

Community Education Council members are consulted on many important matters, and in turn, must consult with parents. Their meetings will be open to the public, and will provide an opportunity for the community to be heard on educational issues.
